Age UK East Sussex is an independent local charity. They’ve been working in the local community to help older people for 70 years, with 40 dedicated staff and over 190 amazing volunteers helping to deliver services and activities for older people in East Sussex.
They are in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to provide practical and emotional support to local older people affected by or living with cancer.
About this opportunity
Volunteers will be asked to provide the support needed to allow an older
person living with the early stages of cancer to complete their treatment by
supporting them with domestic duties, and offering emotional support.
Typically this support will last for around 12 weeks, but this is flexible. During this period you will assist by fulfilling a variety of tasks to facilitate such as gathering and providing information, helping to fill out forms, picking up any items they require, escorting them to appointments etc, as well as being emotionally supportive.
The skills you need
- Ability and enthusiasm for communicating and supporting older people.
- Trustworthy, honest, reliable and responsible.
- Patience and empathy.
- Listening skills and tact.
- Objective and non-judgemental.
- Ability to travel within the County.
Full training will be given for this role, and you won’t be on your own as your co-ordinator and Age UK will support you. Appropriate travel and telephone expenses will be reimbursed, and appropriate insurance cover will be provided on behalf of Age UK East Sussex.
Age UK are specifically looking for volunteers in the Lewes area currently, however this opportunity is open to the wider East Sussex area.
