Community Speedwatch Operator – Heathfield Area Community Speedwatch

Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where proactive members of local communities join with the support and supervision of their local police to record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices.

Registered keepers of vehicles exceeding the speed limit are contacted – initially with a letter explaining the potential risks and consequences of their dangerous behaviour. Repeat offenders will receive a visit from the local police, irrespective of where they live. Beyond these friendly gestures, focused enforcement and criminal prosecution follow based on the collated evidence.

Speedwatch activity is not about interfering with neighbours’ behaviour; it is a proactive solution to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in their local community.

This is a year round role consisting of weekly ad-hoc sessions, depending on the availability of other volunteers. Generally we run 2 sessions in the daytime during the week but if volunteers are available in the evening (daylight hours) or at weekends then this can be taken into consideration.

Applicants do not need to be able to drive but having transport is useful to get to some remote locations. Sessions take place in pairs at the roadside in the Heathfield area.

There are some practical considerations; it is useful if applicants have good hearing and eyesight as the role involves reading out or listening to a colleague and writing down number plates and being able to remember car make, colour and speed. Also the roadside can be noisy so a loud voice is appreciated. Having legible handwriting is also a plus!

You will receive plenty of training in a larger group initially while you gain confidence. We are a friendly group and a good sense of humour is appreciated. Some drivers aren’t very polite to the group and we are able to report abusers. We wear bodyworn cameras for our personal safety.

No DBS check is required, and anyone who is aged 18+ may apply with no upper age limit.
