Hospital Exercise Support Crowborough – Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust

The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) are the main provider of community NHS health and care across Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, High Weald, Lewes and Havens and West Sussex, providing essential medical, nursing and therapeutic care to adults, children and families.

We need you to support patients on the ward participating in exercise groups and on occasion going through exercises with patients on a 1:1 basis.

What you will be doing

  • Helping arrange seating (may include moving tables)
  • Making drinks for patients
  • Assisting in bringing patients to the group; either by pushing wheelchairs or supervising patients to walk to the dayroom (Therapy Staff will identify which patients are safe and suitable for the volunteer to walk with)
  • Assisting SCFT staff as directed during the session; this may include handing out equipment to patients, e.g. Theraband resistant bands, small hand weights
  • Patients not able to attend a group may be seen 1:1 by their bedside. Volunteer to prompt the patient with the exercises already prescribed and issued to the patient.
  • Assisting the patients with correct exercise technique as guided by SCFT staff
  • Assisting patients who may have difficulty following exercise instructions e.g. through poor eyesight, hearing or reduced cognition
  • Talking to and encouraging patients
  • Feeding back to staff any concerns raised by a patient; such as being in pain, not able to do an exercise/activity or/and needing extra guidance or support
  • Helping to tidy up after the session

The skills you need

  • Self-motivated; with an ability to think on your feet and work independently
  • Punctual and dependable
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Interest in rehabilitation
  • Able to take instructions from others
  • Keen to motivate and help others
