Distribution Centre Volunteer – Uckfield Foodbank

We supply three days of food for people who are in food poverty. We have an office and warehouse on the industrial estate and a distribution centre at The Hub in the centre of Uckfield. We open on Tuesdays and Fridays.

This is an essential role in our operation. The person needs to be caring and sensitive to the challenging situations our clients are in. They must be non-judgemental and welcoming to all.

On arrival clients are offered a tea/coffee and the chance to chat while waiting for their food parcel to be prepared. The team leader will discuss with the client how many the food is for and direct the volunteers as to which parcel is needed. There is some lifting and shifting of boxes involved so this needs to be considered by applicants. The volunteer then helps to pack the bags for the client, taking account of any special dietary requests. Occasionally clients may need help getting the food bags to their transport so you may be required to do this.

You would also be expected to help with setting up the room and dismantling the tables etc at the end of the session.
This would be a permanent position, after training and an induction period. There is no driving or IT involved. Need lots of smiles and understanding.

Due to safeguarding volunteers must be aged 18 or over. Client confidentiality must be respected.

The centre is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 11:45am – 2:15pm. Most volunteers currently offer 1 or 2 sessions each month but more regular commitment may be possible for the right candidate. The dates are flexible and on a rota basis so you offer days you know you are available rather than committing to every week.
