Befriending Volunteers – Age UK East Sussex

Age UK East Sussex is an independent local charity. They’ve been working in the local community to help older people for over 75 years. They have a team of dedicated staff and amazing volunteers helping them to deliver services and activities for older people in East Sussex.

They are independent, locally-focused charity and are led by the needs and aspirations of those in later life and are the main county-wide charity supporting older people in East Sussex. Their vision is that East Sussex is a great place to grow older.

They are linking Volunteer Befrienders to a local older person who needs a little support. This is through a weekly telephone call for up to 26 weeks, with possible face-to-face contact from the volunteer, if practical and relevant. Their aim is to encourage the client to be better connected in their community so that they no longer feel isolated and require befriending.

For this role will need to:

  • Have good telephone and communication skills
  • Be a people person
  • Have at least very basic IT skills
  • Be trustworthy and reliable
  • Have a desire to help elderly people in the local community

No DBS check will be required unless they would like to do face to face befriending. All applicants must be over the age of 18.

The role will be every week for 6 months, consisting of 1 phone call that is a minimum of 30 mins. The Volunteer will arrange times with their client to best suit them.

This a position which can make a huge impact on the life of someone feeling isolated and lonely.
