Trustee – Sussex Trug Heritage Centre

Sussex Trug Heritage Centre Limited is a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee, so does not have any shareholders. The Sussex Trug Industry is currently listed by the Heritage Crafts Association as being “critically endangered”, the last stage before extinction. Sussex Trug Heritage Centre has been set up to help train new entrants and re-populate the industry thus preserving the traditional craft of the making of the world-famous Sussex Trug basket.

The Heritage Centre company offers an important way for the community to provide help in stabilising Sussex Trug production and create job opportunities for people of all ages within a revitalised industry. It will also create an interesting tourist attraction for Wealden.

This is a new board of trustees and will be committed to shaping the future of the Sussex Trug Industry for future generations. The board members should have the potential to help define the direction of the organisation and support staff and volunteers.

An enthusiastic Trustee Board of, initially, four members, will comprise professionals from different disciplines including legal, financial, management and marketing. Members of the board will help provide funds and training for new employees and volunteers. Members would be expected to meet every three months and to be able to undertake projects to help achieve the goals of the not-for-profit company. It may be necessary for Zoom or Team meetings to take place occasionally outside of board meetings.

Any applicants will require computer access, as meetings will be conducted using Teams online. There will be monthly board meetings, and a physical quarterly meeting in Herstmonceux, as well as the initial meeting being in person. Any meetings will take place in the evenings or afternoons during the week, and commence early in January 2025.
