Treasurer – Sussex Trug Heritage Centre

The Sussex Trug Heritage Centre is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the Sussex Trug industry, which is critically endangered. The centre aims to restart production of the Royal Sussex Traditional Trugs after a 18-month hiatus due to raw material supply issues. It offers apprenticeships, training programs, and courses in Trug making and woodland crafts. The center also seeks to raise funds through crowdfunding and partnerships to support the industry’s revival and provide job opportunities. The Sussex Trug Heritage Centre is committed to shaping the future of the Sussex Trug Industry for future generations and is actively seeking volunteers to help in its mission.

We are currently recruiting for a new Treasurer, someone with a background in finance or the relevant experience who can assist with guiding the financial decision making of our organisation, and perform all of the necessary financial affairs required.

The role of Treasurer takes on the responsibilities of a director also, joining our board to guide the direction of the charity.

As Treasurer, your duties will include:

  • Handling financial budgets and our internal accounts, presenting this information to the rest of the board in a digestible manner.
  • Keep financial records, using proper accounting procedures and controls.
  • Liaise regularly with Chief Executive regarding financial decisions and matters.
  • Monitor and advise regarding the financial viability of the organisation.
  • Utilise robust and comprehensive financial policies.

What we are looking for:

  • Knowledge of the operation of a non-for-profit company is an advantage, but not essential provided you have enthusiasm to learn. Whether you are semi-retired or retired with a background in finance and looking to utilise your skills, or have your qualifications and are looking to gain experience.
  • Clear communication. You will need to be able to convey financial information to other board members who don’t have a background in finance.
  • Be willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, and liaising with auditors.

As a director, you will also take on responsibilities with the rest of the board:

  • Support and provide advice on Sussex Trug Heritage Centre’s vision, goals, and activities.
  • Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
  • Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
  • Contribute to regular reviews of the company’s own governance.
  • Attend board meetings.
  • Contribute to the broader promotion of Sussex Trug Heritage Centre aims and reputation, by utilising your skills, expertise, knowledge, and contacts.

There are currently 4 board meetings annually which you will be expected to attend, these meetings  are either online or in person. There is also a monthly meeting with the CEO.

This is a great opportunity to put to use your specialised skills to the betterment of a unique local organisation, helping to keep alive a traditional craft dating back centuries and still in use today.
