Bluebell Railway Steamworks! Volunteers – Bluebell Railway Trust

As one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country, we boast one of the finest collections of vintage steam locomotives and carriages, many of which were preserved directly from service on British Railways. Our historic line commenced services in August 1960 and today runs steam trains between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with stops at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote.

The Bluebell Railway operates a museum at their Sheffield Park Station which has interactive displays and locomotives on display known as SteamWorks! The main aim of SteamWorks! is to inform and entertain visitors, with more than 60,000 people visiting the attraction every year.

We need volunteers to open SteamWorks! each morning and to start up the interactive display, check that everything is working, do basic maintenance and clean the interactive screens. The work requires no previous experience or knowledge of railways or museums and is flexible.

The hours are 9.30 to 11am on whatever mornings you are available. You can attend as many or as few mornings as you wish. If you wish you can also join the Museum team for the remainder or part of the day. Steamworks! and the Museum are both are at Sheffield Park Station.

You will be part of a team of volunteers who work for the Bluebell Railway Trust which is totally staffed by volunteers. You’ll benefit from the camaraderie of a happy team, enjoy working in the heart of one of the world’s best preservation railways and get the satisfaction of being amongst many very happy and appreciative visitors.

There are concessionary prices for most food and drinks purchased at the Bessemer Arms Restaurant on site. Full training will be given. There is no age limit for this role.

Due to the location of Sheffield Park Station you will require your own transportation.
